A short but useful paper on South Gaulish colour-coated ware
made at La Graufesenque, and found in the large pit (La Fosse
Malayal) excavated in 1978. This supplements the chapter on
these wares by Kevin Greene (Pre-Flavian Fine Wares from Usk,
1979) by showing the variety of patterns which may occur in
the moulded decorations.

A relatively short but detailed analysis of the complicated
transition between South and Central Gaulish manufacturing of
mould-decorated goblets, supplemented by a useful programme of
chemical analysis.

A figure-stamp (poincon/punch) which was discovered at La
Graufesenque in 1972 was found to be identical to a figure found
on a Lezoux-made vessel; that the latter vessel was not actually
South Gaulish is demonstrated by chemical analysis. Similarly, a
figure-stamp found at Rheinzabem is demonstrated by chemical
analysis to have been made at Lezoux.

A paper on the organisation of pottery production centres,
suggesting that even at the largest known centre, La
Graufesenque, there was little structure or hierarchy, but
rather production was achieved by a collection of independent
artisanal units, which shared only the kilns, which may also
have had wholly independent owners.

The Fosse Malaval, also known as the Fosse de Gallicanus, was a
large pit excavated in 1978 at La Graufesenque, which contained
roughly 8300 vessels, mostly samian. It was probably filled in
less than six months, somewhere between 50 and 60 AD. This paper
is a statistical study of some correlations the dimensions
within the forms present, in particular the correlations between
rim and base diameters, and between vessel height and rim
diameter. These correlations demonstrate the remarkable
homogeneity which was achieved by La Graufesenque potters,
during this peak period of production.

Unfortunately the reprinting of this fundamental volume, first
published in 1934, was limited to 500 copies, but it was still
to be found in a bookshop in Rodez in 1987, priced at FF440
(roughly £44). It contains a large number of very fine
illustrations of South Gaulish figure-types, as well as
photographs of the famous graffiti plates and some potters’
implements, such as ovolo- roulettes. The discussion is
extremely detailed. When are we going to have English
translations of the important French and German volumes (since
the French seem to be happily translating the comparable German
and English works)?

This is the catalogue of an exhibition of La Graufesenque
products which toured various French museums in 1987-9. It
includes a summary of excavations and of the main forms produced
(with date ranges) along with a useful summary of recent work on
'services' (linked vessel types making up 'sets') and of
standardisation of sizes, along with the graffiti (see entry no.
987). Some coarse wares and fine wares are illustrated but the
illustrations (some coloured) concentrate on the samian, moulds,
poinçons, kilns and kiln furniture. A useful supplement to
Vernhet in Jacob & Bémont 1986 (JRPS 2, entry
no. 374). At present available from the Museum at Millau (Place
du Vieux Marche, 12100 Millau, Aveyron).
