In a rescue excavation of a Roman-period site at Besançon,
consisting mainly of ditches, a series of four wooden chests was
found which contained a wealth of material, including a body of
pottery described as "terra nigra". The dating of the
four chests is between c10 BC, for the earliest, and c40 AD, for
the latest, with the two in between put at c10 AD. A modest
series of 22 types (actually 21 types, but with 11 divided into
11A and 11B) is illustrated, mainly platters, dishes and bowls,
although there is also a lid form and a very tall, very plain
ovoid vessel. The whole lot is divided into two broad fabrics,
called A and B, of which A is (initially) described as of
unknown provenance, while B is local, although the catalogue
also notes that three forms are known to have been produced at
the Vesle Valley, one at the Vesle Valley/Saintes (in Aquitanial),
and one at St Rémy-en- Rollat (Allier), as well as four which
are definitely attested as Besançon products. The discussion
following the paper makes it clear that there is still some
uncertainty concerning provenances, and a programme of analyses
is required. No terra rubra was found, nor any stamps.

This is a very substantial type series of amphorae found at a
single large site at Besançon. The total minimum number of
amphorae was 2,477, filling eight cubic metres. The material is
dominated by Dr 1 amphorae, which amounted to 87% by weight,
although only 43% by minimum number of vessels. The rest of
assemblage, however, comprises a remarkable range of
importations from Gaul, Spain, Italy, Africa and the Near East.
The percentages are illustrated graphically by two- and
three-dimensional histograms, and some 34 stamps are illustrated
with drawings and photographs.
